Heading into the final stretch of the semester can make you feel a bit stir-crazy. This weekend, put down the books for a minute and try out some cheap, or free, activities — on campus and in greater Boston. Not sure where to find them? Don’t fret; BU Today has your weekend planned.
Tonight
You really don’t need to head out into the wide world of Allston for your Friday night entertainment — not with indie darlings Tokyo Police Club playing BU Central for free. If you don’t know the hook to “Your English Is Good,” get yourself to the basement of the GSU at 8:30 p.m.
Hate all things indie? Fortunately, the Programming Council’s got you covered with tonight’s Drive In Movie Double Feature. Juno (formerly indie, now totally mainstream) and Gone Baby Gone (not indie at all) are playing on the BU Beach, starting at 8 p.m. Rain location is Metcalf Hall.
Saturday
Earth Day may be over, but everyone knows that our planet’s in rough shape. Do your part by joining the 9th Annual Charles River Cleanup, sponsored by the Charles River Watershed Association. Volunteers will meet at designated sites around Boston and its suburbs at 9 a.m. for three hours of hard work in the great outdoors.
After a morning of labor, enjoy an afternoon of leisure with free sailing at the Boston Sailing Center. The organization is kicking off New England’s sailing season by offering waterfront rides on skippered boats from 1 to 5 p.m. The center’s teaching staff will be on hand to answer questions about sailing terms and basic techniques, and refreshments will be available. The center is on Lewis Wharf, accessible by the T’s Green, Orange, and Blue Lines. For more information and directions, visit the Boston Sailing Center’s Web site.
Too much fresh air? Head to MIT’s La Sala de Puerto Rico to watch Imobilare, the school’s breakdance club, celebrate its 10th anniversary with a day of popping and locking and house dance competitions. The winner of the three-on-three breakin’ competition gets $1,200, and judges include Nemesis, Boppin Andre, and Caleaf. The event begins at noon in MIT’s Student Center, 77 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge; tickets are $12 for general admission and $7 for students.
Saturday night poses a dilemma: to attend the WTBU fundraiser in BU Central, featuring Spitzer Space Telescope, the King Left, and Film School, or go to the MLK Peace Concert in the George Sherman Union’s Metcalf Hall, where Braddigan, Amy Steinberg, Love in Stockholm, Delhill, and the Powers That Be will perform. Both events start at 8 p.m. The WTBU show is free for BU students and $5 for guests; the MLK Peace Concert is $10, with all proceeds going to the antipoverty charity Love, Light and Melody.
Sunday
We’re not trying to jinx anybody, but if the women of the Terrier lacrosse team play a good game this afternoon, they’ll make it to Sunday’s America East championship game at Nickerson Field, looking for their fourth league championship in a row. Here’s hoping the Terriers take the field at 1 p.m. — if they do, they deserve a good crowd.
